Are you planning on Photographing Travels with Kids? This can be trickier than you might expect. After about two days asking them to turn around and smile at the camera will probably elicit groans and frowns. Here are my top tips for Photographing Travels with Kids.
First of all, I know that a lot of you out there will only like photos where your kids are staring directly into the camera and smiling so please hear me out.
Your are travelling. You can take photos of your children ANYWHERE. The purpose of taking photos of your kids while on holiday is to capture the environment they are in, how they are feeling (excited, surprised, disgusted?) and capture memories of the overall feeling of the trip.
Here are my top tips for Photographing Travels with Kids:
- Not every photo has to be of your kids! Take photos of architecture you like, plants, flowers, signs, etc. I always like to capture signs, foreign languages and flowers. It sets the scene for telling the tale of your holiday. These can be considered kind of like b-roll - adding to the story but not the main attraction. They can also be stunning, printable images.
- You don't have to capture the front of your kids face. I know the may be a shocker, but if you look at my images most of them are of the back of their heads. I want to show that they were there but my main goal is to capture the environment they are in.
- Capture the negative. What! I'm sure you want to show how amazing your holiday was but down the line you are going to love those weird faces looking at art, trying new food or almost puking after the roller coaster. Down the line I promise those will be some of your favourite photos.
- Don't worry about the focus and get creative. Are your kids out of focus? That's OK! Maybe the most interesting part is the background.
- TAKE THE PHOTO. This is the most important. Just take it. And with phones these days there's no excuse not too.
