Find a photographer whose style you like
If I had a nickel for the amount of times I had to explain I don't do a certain style of photography I'd be a rich lady. Look at the portfolio of any potential photographers and decide if you click with what they see. Are they more formal, relaxed, use bright lights, backgrounds? Do they offer a lot of variety in their posing or are you looking for something simple and just want to get in and out. Where do they take their headshots? All these factors can help narrow down the photographer for you.
Hair and Makeup
Do you need hair and makeup? Are you OK with getting it off site or do you prefer to have it on-site. Do you like the style of the hair and makeup artist?
Wardrobe
Do you know what you want to wear? Do you need help? Does your photographer offer help or resources?
Inspiration Images
Look at other headshots you love. This can be through Google Images, Pinterest, Instagram or competitor websites. Be realistic in what can be achieved. Clients often bring me kooky poses from models and actors who've had years of posing experience. Is this something you think you can pull off? I always say I'll try it, but my clients rarely end up selecting those images.
Themes
Is there a theme that comes through in your images? Often once you select a variety of images you will see certain themes. These may include all sitting, all wearing a blazer, all looking outside or all with arms crossed. It's really interesting when these themes emerge.
