A beautiful photoshoot is the perfect way to capture your pregnancy and document this fleeting and special time in your life. Here are my tips and ideas for what to wear at your maternity photoshoot to feel beautiful and confident inside and out.
For every type of session I make sure that my clients are fully prepared. I aim to guide you every step of the way from pre-shoot all the way through the session.
Scheduling your maternity session
Every bump is different but in general between 27-34 weeks works best. Multiples may want to book earlier.
Things to avoid
If you are planning on shooting nude or semi nude avoid tight underwear, bras and socks.
Wardrobe
Every mother is different and some mothers prefer fully clothed shots while others prefer to go semi nude or fully nude. Whatever you decide to do there are lots of clothing options that will work. Here are a few of my tips on what to wear at your maternity photoshoot.
Form Fitting Clothing
Show off your curves with a form fitting dress. I have the above dress available to borrow but you can also bring your own. Make sure it hugs your curves and you feel great in it. I suggest solid colours.
Flowy Empire Waist Dresses
A more boho style dress is beautiful for indoor or outdoor shoots and has a more relaxed vibe. I often check sales at Free People to see if there are any that may be available.
Lace
Lace photographs beautiful whether it's a silhouette with the light shining through or just on its own. I have a variety of lace dresses and kimonos you can borrow.
Bra and Underwear
Fabric
Silks, chiffons and flowy fabrics are beautiful to show off your bump. I have a peach chiffon but if you'd like to bring your own I recommend 3 meters to drape.
A Pop of Colour
Add a pop of colour to your portraits with colours that complement your skin tone. Avoid crazy patterns as they can distract from the beauty of your image.
Relaxed Clothing
A lot of my moms just want to wear something comfortable that represents them and often that's jeans and a t-shirt or sweater. This is perfect for showing off a snippet of your life right now and what you are really wearing day to day.
Other ideas
An pair of open jeans (not maternity jeans!)
Bra and underwear with an open shirt or cardigan (love this one!)
Bandeau top and maxi skirt
Statement jewellery
The idea are truly endless and don't be afraid to think outside the box.

You can buy dresses specifically for your photoshoot but don't be afraid to borrow or shop your own closet.

My biggest tips is to not wait until you feel like you have the perfect bump or have gotten enough sleep or whatever. You are beautiful now. My job is to make you feel 100% relaxed and confident through guidance, expert posing and if you choose to do it in studio a relaxing environment. I want to make sure you are at your best so you love your portraits and you will pass them on to your children too.
