How to Prepare for your Family Photography Session
After three years in business I’ve literally photographed over a hundred families and probably in the thousands for children. What I’ve learned is that when everyone is prepared the photo session is so much more fun, runs so much more smoothly and the pictures turn out. Here are my tips for how to prepare for your Family Photography Session:
Set a realistic time
Kids nap, the witching hour is real and early morning sessions may be great for kids but sometimes mom and dad take time to wake up and get rolling. Book a time that works for you and where your child will be in the best mood. Almost all my daytime sessions are at 10:00. I find that it’s late enough for mom and dad to get ready, but early enough so that kiddos are still in a good mood.
My one exception is all-outdoor sessions which are done the hour before sunset. During the peak hours for summer this is usually very late and does not work out for little children. My recommendation? Book a spot in the spring or fall OR do most of your session inside with a few bonus shots outdoors.
Be realistic with the weather and the clothing you expect your child to wear
I know that many of you want your outdoor photoshoots without jackets or boots. I get it – winter wear isn’t always attractive. Just be realistic. You may have to cut the session short or take breaks to warm up if it’s cold outside.
Talk to Dad
I’d say that most dads do not want to be a part of the photoshoot. They are doing it because they love their spouse and know it is important. Honestly, by the time I have a little opening talk and we get going most dads really get into it and they are the ones to say how much fun it is. But there are some hold outs. Just let Dad know that I will be directing them – they do not have to pose or guess at what to do. They will also mostly be playing with their kids. They do that anyway, right?
Choose outfits in advance and make sure everyone wants to wear them
I know, I know – kids change their mind, right? But still. Make sure everyone is into their outfits and understand they have to wear them for the photoshoot. Yep, this includes dad.
Extended Family Session?
You’ve got your work cut out for you. Usually there are a COUPLE people that didn’t get the wardrobe memo, or just don’t want to be there. I really think clear communication is the key. Also focus on the outcome – beautiful family photos! And they didn’t have to arrange anything!
Start getting ready in advance
There’s nothing worse than looking at the clock and realizing I’ll be there in 5 minutes. Remember I’m taking photos of you, so if you are stressed or hating your hair it will unfortunately show up. Forever.
MOM – you are IMPORTANT
In my prep emails I stress that Mom has to look her best and I MEAN IT. Mom – focus on what you want to wear and make sure you feel fabulous. Get yourself a new haircut, take the time to do your makeup if that’s your thing and make sure you feel GREAT. Yes, you want to capture your kids but guess what – they want to remember Mom too.
Tidy up!
So, this is totally up to you. Some families just want to capture things as they are and I can often shoot around clutter. But that family photo on the master bed? Make sure the pictures on the back wall are straight, anything you don’t want on your bedside tables is gone and your bedspread is clean. I think one, beautiful shot is about perfect.
That’s it – easy right? Now you just have to book your session!
