I've been photographing beautiful expecting mother's for nearly 7 years and through that experience I have amassed a wealth of experience, knowledge, tips and tricks. Here are my Top Tips for Maternity Photography.

Top Tips for Maternity Photography

Pick the right photographer.

I find that out of all the styles of family photography that maternity photographer is the one where my clients have the biggest opinion on style PLUS where the style varies the most.

Every photographer is different and every photographer will offer a different vibe. Look at their portfolio. Does it speak to you?

Communicate Your Style

Take a look at Instagram and Pinterest. Do any photos make you light up? Do you really hate any photos? Your photographer should be able to guide you to create those photographers, using their own style. This is also an opportunity to bring up any red flags. If your photo is outside surrounded by flowers and it's January it's time to have a talk.

Decide what to wear

Your dress should reflect your style, but also show off your bump. A loose fitting sweater dress won't show much. Neither will a big parka. I offer a selection of bump worthy dresses, but check out your own closet too. Underwear and a loose sweater, a robe, bra and underwear, leggings and a sports bra and a simple slip dress are all great choices that you may not have thought about.

Partners

If you have a partner and they will be joining you for the shoot, make sure they are on board. Also styles have changed. Many men fear that I'll make them go topless for every shot, but that isn't really my style. It's all pretty relaxed.

Combine it with a newborn photoshoot

Almost every photographer offers a discount if you also book a newborn shoot with them. It's something to think about.

Location

Where do you want your shoot to take place? I offer mostly in-home and studio shoots with some outdoors.

When To Book

I suggest booking your maternity photoshoot between 28-32 weeks - when your bump is visible but you aren't too big to move around. I have photographed bumps as early as 20 weeks and as late as 41 weeks though. It really depends on the look you want and.... when you've finally decided to book the shoot.

I hope these tips help you to book and have the best maternity shoot ever whether it's with me or another photographer.

And... congratulations on your pregnancy!
