How to choose a newborn photographer:

Do some research!

Look at Pinterest or Instagram under the hashtag #newbornphotography. What type of photos speak to you? Do you prefer highly stylized newborn photos that are wrapped and have all sorts of props? Do you like different backdrops? Do you prefer something much more boho or do you prefer clean, minimal lines? Do you like relaxed, easy unposed sessions or do you want to be posed in front of a backdrop? This is your starting point! Once you find a style you like then you can find a photographer that offers that style. BIG TIP: Photographers have a style. One photographer does not do every style of newborn photo.

Decide what types of photos you want

Do you want photos of just the baby or do you want pictures including your family too?

Decide the location

Do you want photos in your own home? This may be more convenient for you, but means you may have to declutter a little. Do you prefer to go to a studio? This may be a bigger adventure for you but it means you don't have to worry about what your home looks like. BIG TIP: Photographers usually move stuff around anyways so whether your home is messy or not doesn't really matter.

Do you need outfits?

Many photographers offer outfits, but of course what those outfits look like can vary. Some may be very cutesy and colourful, others can be more minimal and rustic. A glance at the photographers instagram feed will give you an example but always ask to make sure that those are the photographers outfits and that you can borrow them.

Are you OK with the baby being photographed within 10-14 days or do you need more time?

I don't pose newborns, but I believe that in order for those photos to be taken your newborn has to be within a certain age. Are you OK with that, or do you think you may want more flexibility?

Time to start enquiring!

You should feel like you click with the photographer and there should definitely be a level of trust. How is the communication? Do you feel like you would get along or is there something that is giving you a red flag feeling? Also, I know there are all sorts of budgets out there but you often get what you pay for. If someone is offering $50 newborn sessions for hours and hours of work, make sure you see their portfolio.

Getting newborn photos is a big deal, but getting them shouldn't be. The entire process should feel seamless and easy. It's hard enough having a newborn - worrying about your photos shouldn't add to your stress.
