Natural Studio Newborn Photographer

Located in Montreal, Quebec, Michelle Little Photography is a Natural Studio Newborn Photographer. Who is Michelle Little Photography? That's me!

I'm so excited to host my first newborn session in my new studio! The windows are beautiful and the light is amazing.

How do you decide if you want newborn photos in your home or in the studio? I hear that a lot, and the reasons aren't probably what you expect (light).

Newborn Session Location Pros and Cons

In-home Newborn Photography Session

Pros:

  • Photos are more than portraits because you are capturing your life right now from where you soothe your baby to the way you decorated the nursery. In this way, these photos can feel more meaningful.
  • Everything you need is on hand
  • No need to move
  • More of a storytelling type session vs portraits (although we do get a lot of portraits)

Cons:

  • You may just not want anyone in your space right now.
  • You want very clean, minimal photos and your home isn't clean or minimal
  • You don't want to stress about how your home looks.

Misconceptions:

  • You don't need to worry about the way your home looks. In even the most sparse and minimal homes I will still move furniture, and objects. I will get the photo - I assure you - even if that means re-arranging your kitchen. Now if that is something you have anxiety over, maybe a studio session is best.
  • Don't worry about light. I have photographed in very dark homes and still got the shots. Either we move to a window or I bring out my lights. I have photographed in central Montreal for years - 90% of homes are dark.
  • I will not hang out in your home for hours. I have had newborns - I will get the shots and give you time as needed but I will always read the room and leave when I feel it (as long as I have the shots).

Studio Newborn Photography Session

Pros:

  • Shorter sessions because I already know the light
  • Airy, light and minimal vs in-home sessions that tend to be darker and moodier
  • More of a portrait style sessions vs storytelling
  • Sometimes younger children are better behaved when they are not in their own space
  • I have the basket (see above) in the studio
  • Show up, get the photos and leave (or stop for lunch at McKiernan)
  • The studio is 99% stroller friendly. There are two stairs when you first get in.
  • There is a toilet in the studio (no potty though).

Cons:

  • You must leave your house. Sometimes this can feel overwhelming - especially in the winter.
  • You may want a session that shows your house. This may not feel important now, but if you ever move or change decor it's fun to remember the way it looked.
  • No change of clothes on hand. If baby throws up on you, and you haven't brought a spare set of clothes you are kind of stuck.
